Thematic chapters give continuity to the lesson, since the vocabulary, grammar, readings, activities and cultural information are all co-ordinated by theme. The text includes activity material, with focused practice, as well as creative communication activities for each grammar point. This communicative focus offers the instructor continual classroom opportunities to use French in realistic situations. Optional "Intermede" sections appear after each chapter, allowing the instructor to adapt the book to suit different teaching styles and situations. The cultural material included is detailed, with French and Francophone cultures represented in special boxed features, in author-written and authentic readings and in realia-based exercises. A listening comprehension tape for students is included with each text. The tape is co-ordinated with a chapter feature, new to this edition, entitled "A l'ecoute", which gives students targeted and global listening activities. Also new to this edition are "Portraits", which provide biographies of famous French or Francophone writers, artists, scientists; and "En savoir plus" which offers functional information such as currency exchange and the French school system.
