The authors contributing to this book share the view that the region is a complex system of interconnected networks of various processes and human activities organized to pursue certain goals. In today's world, knowledge is primarily created in cities. Cities and large urban agglomerations are regional development centres since they attract, absorb and accumulate significant innovative potential for the whole region in terms of technology, economy, politics, human capital and culture.
