The concept of the cluster has been known in world literature since the mid 1920s. The popularity of the concept has increased considerably since Michael Porter's book The Competitive Advantage of Nations came out in 1990. Porter characterises clusters as geographical concentrations of mutually related companies, specialized suppliers, service providers, companies from related industry sectors as well as other organizations related to them, competing against each other but also collaborating.
