The Vagabond (Translated from the original French, La Vagabonde) by prolific French author Colette (Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette), is a 1910 novel telling the story of Renée Néré. The 33-year old Parisian becomes a music hall dancer after her divorce from a cruel and faithless husband. It’s based on Colette’s actual experiences. Taking place in turn-of-the-20th century Paris, it’s considered one of Colette’s best early novels, and has been reconsidered as historic feminist literature. It wasn’t translated into English for U.S. publication until 1955.
